The Happy, Beautiful Thais.

Before I moved to Bangkok for the first time in 2007, I had the impression that Thailand is not safe, and the people are dangerous. Thinking of how naïve I was back then, I laugh at myself. All those negative assumptions were a result of hearsay I had heard about Thailand. Never did I know that one day I would call Thailand, my home. After living here for almost 10 years, I realized that I was so wrong in seeing Thai people. At certain points, they are better than my countrymen. I will list down Thais general deeds and their interests based on my experience.

Smile

Yes, Thais are generous with their smiles. They like to smile a lot even to the strangers. When they smile, you can see that it’s coming from the heart. Consequently, I always feel welcome wherever I go. Over time, this facial expression had an influence on me. Yeah… I didn’t smile a lot before not because I was unfriendly but simply as I thought It was not necessary especially to the strangers. Living in Thailand had taught me to smile more. When you smile sincerely, people will feel safe and welcomed. That’s how I feel when Thais smiling at me. They are not dangerous anymore… hahaha. Hence, The Land of Smile is exactly what Thailand is.

Polite

Of course, not all of them are polite, same goes to not all people are bad. Thais usually are polite when they speak and act. They don’t cut the queue, prioritize children and elderly, also not to lose temper easily particularly in public. When they speak, they always use the polite particles “ka” (spoken by women) and “krap” (spoken by men). That is why you hear the word ka/krap a lot in the Thai language. They respect each other with Buddhist philosophy as their way of life.

Helpful

This is one of the reasons why I like living in Thailand so much. They are very helpful. If you get lost and want to ask them for direction, they will try their best to help you even though they can’t speak English. For me, it is not asking for a direction that amazed me but beyond that. Usually, I will spend my weekend with kids at the shopping mall. Most of the time I have to use a baby stroller, which means I must take an elevator whenever I need to go up or down the floor. Each time, the Thais will help me by keeping the lift’s door open for me to get in. Also, the person closest to the lift’s buttons will ask which floor you are going and will press the button for you. I had a bad experience in Kuala Lumpur where my baby stroller got stuck in between the doors of the lift where no one on the scene care to hold the door for me. The incident made me upset about the lack of consideration towards people with baby and kids shown in Malaysia. Thailand, on the other hand, is the opposite. Once, I was going home by bus with my daughter and had many grocery shopping bags. The bus was full where no seats available, so I had to stand. One of the passengers who was seating in front of me offered a help to hold my shopping bags and others were offering their seat. I never expected that kindness and have seen they did it to others as well.

Friendly

Thais are friendly people. They often approach each other and begin a small talk. Since I look like a Thai to them, there is always someone who talks to me randomly in the gym’s changing room, while queuing at the supermarket or on the street. Sometimes I feel guilty because I just smiled and pretend that I understood them. When they ask me questions, then I have to say “put thai mai dai ka” to let them know that I can’t speak Thai and I’m not Thai. Isn’t it cool that you can make friend with Thai people easily?

Another characteristic of Thai people that I’ve seen is that they like something beautiful, charming and vibrant which they apply in every aspect of their life. Intricate craftsmanship in their arts and architectures especially their Wats and traditional houses resemble these features. Thai food regarded as one of the most delicious food on earth, because of the fresh ingredients they use in their cooking. The wet market around Bangkok offers relatively cheap and fresh seafood, poultry, vegetables, as well as fruits. The market looks beautiful with many kinds of colorful fruits, greeneries, and shining fishes. In most Thai’s prominent supermarkets, you can get freshly cooked food, salad bar or cut fruits. All are packed nicely to catch the attention of customers and it looks very tempting too.

Thai people care so much about their appearance especially ladies, are obsessed with makeup. Besides that, they like to enhance their beauty which explains the abundance of aesthetic clinics which exist around Thailand. It is nice to see for instance a cleaner lady or lady security guard, is well groomed, in a profession that we think the use of makeup is not necessary. ( I’m comparing with people who work in these field in my own country where you hardly see the use a lipstick). No matter what, they always strike me with their generosity and sincerity.

After mingling with many Thais, some of them became my friends. We always do many activities together and they too, have helped me a lot regarding ‘Thai matters’. They are fun to be with, cheerful and at the same time crazy. However, I enjoy every moment very much and glad to have known them otherwise I might be like an outcast in the foreign land. Thank you, khorp khun kha!

I’m Not a Supermom, Not the Only One.

You, what? Travelling with three kids alone, by yourself?” asked one of my friends astonishingly. “Er…. Yeah” I replied and wonder what was in her mind. That expression was not one, but some responses I received when I told someone that I’m travelling with my kids all by myself without a husband. To me, that is completely normal circumstance. You have kids and want to go somewhere but you can’t leave them. So, you must take them with you in whatever situation it might be. Not a big deal, right?

Soon, I realized that something which appears usual to me may not be the same to others. I may think that travelling with kids is nothing sensational but to others, it is a plus point as a mom because the situation can be overwhelming. Subsequently, I was called a supermom simply because I’m capable to handle three kids on the journey. They reasoned, it is not easy to cope with three small kids all together especially on long hour trip. Not necessarily travelling, even going to the mall or park, they rather bring someone to help or not to make the trip. My eldest daughter Sena is eight years old and she is reliable if she were to look after her young brother and sister. Benjamin and Lily both are turning two and one years old in a few months. With Sena’s help, she eased the strains I faced while travelling.

Once, we were flying to Bangkok from Kuala Lumpur international airport, I was approached by a lady who was impressed to see me and the kids. She told me that she always fears to travel with kids without her husband even though her kids were older, between 6 to 12 years old. Besides watching out kids, a mom also needs to be in charge of the luggage as well as going thru the hassle of airport security checks. Hence, being well prepared to minimize the trouble is essential. Although I use a baby stroller when travelling, I always take a baby carrier with me as a backup. Sometimes, you have to surrender the baby stroller earlier before you reach the gate, or you need to collect the stroller at the luggage collection area upon arrival.

Every mom can be a supermom once you discover your own strength because we do most of the daily tasks managing the household for instance cooking, cleaning and care for kids. However, when comes to travelling, I always ensure that my travel style is savvy and do some preparation ahead to make my journey smooth and easier. Most important, my hands are free from holding handbags or any other stuff, so I can always grab my kids when needed. Similarly having too many bags hanging around the baby stroller or carry more than one bag on your shoulder is not practical.

Here, I share my style when travelling with kids as a reference.

  1. Ensure that you don’t hold anything. Small kids tend to get excited when they see new places or object and intend to touch it to fulfil their curiosity. It would be easy for you to grab their hands or chase them if they are running away.
  2. Instead of a handbag, I use medium size waist bag to keep all passports and wallet and ensure it can be easily reached when needed.
  3. Likewise, a nappy bag. I use a backpack type so, I could carry it at my back and baby in front of me in the carrier.
  4. I had long hair and it can be disturbing when I let it loose free whenever I’m with kids. So, I used a headband or tied my hair. This may not be a problem if you’re wearing a headscarf and keep it simple.
  5. Since I have a toddler and baby, I’m using a double stroller to move around or else, you can also look for a lightweight stroller for a single kid.
  6. Kids tend to get bored while travelling. Therefore, I allow Sena to use a tablet when we’re on the road and some toys for the little ones.
  7. Furthermore, I will prepare enough sustenance for kids to ‘survive’ for the entire journey. Juices, snacks, milk powder, water and the list go on.
  8. Don’t forget some useful medication or first aids for instance fever syrup, ointment and Vick VapoRub. It will be very helpful when you need it.

From my experience, travelling with an infant or toddler is a lot easier than travelling with older kids because they are portable. They will be happy as long as you keep their routine closely and create a comfortable environment. A baby usually sleeps while on the journey and cry when they are hungry or need a diaper change. Unlike 3 or 4 years old kids, they are more demanding and don’t really know how to express their feeling which resulted to tantrum. Remember, it is absolutely natural for kids to cry or misbehave sometimes but then again, we can tackle them with toys or snacks. Hence, having a break in between your trip to let them cool down and refresh is equally important.

All mothers are indeed a supermom as they are the best custodian for their kids. As a mother, kids are the first priority and we always look out what best for them. If we prepare early and plan our journey well, we can handle most of the awkward situation with kids. Don’t hesitate to bring along your kids for holidays otherwise, you will miss some of the greatest moment together. After all, that is the purpose of having all family members together to discover the wonder of the world. Enjoy every moment and create a lot of lifetime memories!

My Scuba Diving Experience: How I Finally Overcome My Fear.

“Why didn’t you go for scuba diving course?” Asked my then boyfriend, now husband sometimes around 11 years ago. He asked because he was doing an OWD course in Kuala Lumpur followed by underwater training in Tioman Island. Although scuba diving sounds interesting, the question was left unanswered. In fact, I didn’t know what to answer. After having a short ‘conversation’ within myself, I realized that there were two factors deterred me from going. First on the list was FEAR. Fear of depth or known as batophobia. Enough by imagining myself being in a dark deep water will surely put me into anxiety. Sea bottoms are full of mysteries, darkness and unknown creatures.

Still, I fancied for scuba diving just because I wanted to try something new. Overcome the fear should not be that bad, as I told myself. The only thing I have to do was just do it. The second reason was not a major concern for me but it was tough. Lack of financial or in a simple word, no money. Open Water Scuba Diving course (OWD) during the time cost around 700 to 1000 Malaysian ringgit. That’s a lot of money as it takes up almost 50% of my monthly salary. I simply couldn’t afford and wouldn’t spend that much money just for leisure. So, I told my boyfriend the former as the main reason I don’t go for scuba diving.

Years passed, never I thought of diving again. Only when I have three kids, my husband asked if I am still interested in scuba diving. His reason was, he wants me to be his buddy every time he goes for diving and I replied “yes”. Something I wouldn’t do back then but now I feel brand-new with a high confidence level. It is because my fear breaks slowly over the years since I spent more holidays on islands and beaches. I began with snorkeling in Krabi and did a Discovery scuba diving in Bali. I knew now, its all about the way you think. If you think negatively and afraid to try, you will not go anywhere but if you open your mind and stay positive, everything is possible. I was still in doubt about the course but I decided to go on.

After searching considerably about the course available nearby our home Bangkok, we finally chose the nearest course Centre which is in Pattaya. It is just 2 hours’ drive and easy to get there. Since the course will be a three days course, I have to consider the kids as well about what they can do while I am out for dive. We needed a resort with kid’s friendly facilities and not far from the Centre. For that reason, we booked Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya. I was certain that my kids will be very happy to spend their holidays even though it’s not far from our home. There were few options available for OWD course and I registered for e-learning so I could start to study the theory and complete the tests as well as the final exam at home.

Once I received confirmation and learning tools online, I began my homework diligently. To my surprise, it turned out to be exciting and I was eager to be underwater. The lesson consists of several sections with different subjects for instance skills, equipment, and safety. Furthermore, there was also a section which I need to do a calculation and learn about the law of physics. In spite of this, I enjoyed enhancing knowledge and skills for myself.

On the first day in Pattaya, I met my instructor at Pattaya Dive Centre. He introduced himself as ‘Dan’ and quickly gone through the documents that I brought along. He was happy to learn that I completed my theory and passed the final exam. “You saved a lot of my time today,” he said to me and briefly explained about my lesson for the day. For day one, I had to do a training in a swimming pool nearby. After I settled the remaining course fees, we were off to the swimming pool. Over there, I started with 200m swimming test and followed with skills required as an open water diver. Mr. Dan was very professional and excellent instructor. He demonstrated patiently on how to use scuba equipment and helped me to master the skills. The training took only half day as I’ve done my eLearning earlier. Mr. Dan was very satisfied with my performance and reassure that I will not have difficulty being underwater when we go to the sea on the next day.

At 8 morning on the second day after breakfast, my husband and I waited to be picked up at alluring Hard rock hotel’s lobby. A few minutes later, a small passenger truck arrived to send us to the jetty. There, we met Mr. Dan as well as other members and boarded a large boat. Before I jump off the boat for the first time, Mr. Dan did a revision to refresh the skilled I just learned, also adjusted my gears. Besides him, my husband was very supportive as he planned to dive together with us to stay close, watching me on training. The moment of truth finally took place. I had to jump into water while at the same time, I barely walk with oxygen tank hanged on my back. I was so nervous because the fear I had was not completely over. For that reason, I just stood at the verge for a couple of minutes to calm myself. After catching several deep breaths, I noticed that there were many people in the water waved at me including my husband. Slowly I gained back my confidence and jumped into the water. As soon as I became stable on the surface, I gave an OK signal to my instructor. When everyone was ready, we released the air out of the jacket to gradually decent to the bottom.

Descending was not as easy as I’ve seen in the video during eLearning. I went down too fast and not able to control my buoyancy, causing pressure in my ears. Consequently, I sank and fell on scattered sea urchins which stung my knee at the bottom. Although it was painful in the beginning, I had to go on. Water visibility was very bad as many small particles stirred up together with sea water. I could see almost nothing where according to Mr. Dan, it was not the best time to dive in Pattaya because of the raining season approaching. Strong wind and current contributed to poor visibility also causing diving more difficult. However, I was not scared and remain calm throughout my training. Maybe, it was because I knew that my husband was nearby and Mr. Dan will always ensure my safety as his student. My first dive was somewhat awful considering that poor buoyancy control which caused me to drift up and down, eventually separated from my group. I ascended inadvertently to the surface, not knowing that I should release the air to stay lower. Although my first dive was not very successful, I was ready with my second dive after lunch. This time, I could feel that my performance was slightly better than the first one.

On the next day which was also the last day of training, I asked Mr. Dan extensively on how to control my buoyancy properly and descent in order to avoid pressure in my ears since I had that issue several times. Mr. Dan helped me to understand the situation and clarified some areas which unclear to me before we begin to dive. The result was amazing since I was able to follow through with minimal issues. In the end, I had successfully completed my underwater training and received an applaud from my instructor.

The conclusion is, its all about your mind. If you think you can do it, surely you can because the brain will work according to what you think. Do not panic, take a deep breath and stay calm in every situation. Always be positive because any negativity will make things worse. I did it and succeed. So, it will surely work for most people.
